Lys i Mørket on Læsø
As darkness falls over Læsø, some truly special experiences await. On the first weekend in November, ‘Lys i Mørket’ invites both islanders and visitors to an atmospheric cultural weekend filled with light, nature, storytelling and a sense of community.

Light in the Darkness on Læsø – experience the island in the November darkness
November is a special time on Læsø. The days grow shorter, the pace slows down, and the darkness makes way for experiences you won’t find in quite the same way during the rest of the year. Here, the streetlights are few and far between, the stars seem close at hand, and there are plenty of opportunities to feel the tranquillity and a sense of presence.
During ‘Light in the Darkness’, the island’s darkness becomes part of the experience. All around Læsø, local enthusiasts, associations, cultural institutions and businesses invite you to events that bring light and life to the November days.
A weekend of light, culture and community
‘Light in the Dark’ offers a wide range of experiences, with Læsø’s nature, history and local community taking centre stage.
Look forward to everything from fascinating stories, music and cultural experiences to outdoor activities, cosy get-togethers and local culinary delights. Some events take place by candlelight, others under the open night sky, and many offer the chance to discover places and aspects of Læsø that you may not have known about before.
That is precisely what makes ‘Light in the Dark’ so special: the opportunity to explore, meet people and experience the island in a new way.
Experience Læsø’s unique darkness
On Læsø, darkness is not merely the absence of light. It is an experience in itself.
Far from the lights and hustle and bustle of the city, the night sky is allowed to unfold, and on clear evenings the stars shine impressively brightly over the island. At the same time, the darkness creates a special atmosphere around the small lights, the cosy meeting places and the stories being told.
‘Light in the Dark’ is the perfect opportunity to experience Læsø outside the peak season, when nature, tranquillity and local life come to the fore in a different way.
Four islands – one shared cultural weekend
‘Lys i Mørket’ is a collaboration between four Danish islands: Læsø, Samsø, Ærø and Langeland.
Every year, on the first weekend in November, the four islands invite visitors to enjoy special experiences based on their local nature, culture and history.
Although the islands have much in common, they each have their own distinctive character and traditions. Consequently, the programme varies from island to island, but the idea is the same: to bring light, life and a sense of community at a time of year when darkness would otherwise loom ever larger.
