Læsø Cultural Heritage Days

Photo: visitlæsø

Læsø Cultural Heritage Days take place once again on September 11th, 12th and 13th.

Læsø Cultural Heritage Days September 2025

Læsø is a very special community, surrounded by water on all sides. Small enough to feel managable
- and big enough to have things in common with other societies.

We are a community which follows the times, but our size and isolation mean that we can always perceive, where we came from and what shaped us... And perhaps where we are headed. There is always physical evidence of how we carry our cultural heritage with us in the present and towards the future.

During the Cultural Heritage Days, we will show you what Læsø came from,
and show and discuss, how we can use our history - now and in the future.

BLACK SALT AND SEAWEED AS FERTILIZER

Læsø Tang, Doktorvejen

Presentation: Thursday, September 11th at 13.30 - 14.30

In recent days, we have discovered how dependant the environment and the earth's climate is on the sea's plant life, including algae and eelgrass.

The seaweek is, and always has been, a big and important part of Læsø - both ecologically and economically. Aside from being used for the seaweed roofs, - which are actually not made of seaweed, but eelgrass - seaweed which are big algae, has been used for consumption, fertilizer and for salt production through many years.

Visit Læsø Tang on Doktorvejen, and learn how seaweed has been used, and is being used in several different ways. And should you wish to taste, you will find plenty of tasty products in the store.

In the café, you can buy lunch, coffee and cake.

STORYTELLING AT MUSEUMSGÅRDEN

PLACE: Museumsgården, Museumsvej 3

Date and time: Thursday, September 11th at 11.30-12.30

Museum Director Simon Kyhn-Madsen tells us about Læsø's seaweed roofs and the farm's final resident.

On Læsø, you can find something entirely unique: roofs thatched with seaweed. Or rather, eelgrass, which you could find plenty of along the coasts in the past. Back then, it was collected by the women, who brought it back on a horse and wagon to the house which needed thatching. Over time, the eelgrass disappeared, meaning the houses could no longer be maintained. The seaweed roofs disappeared one by one.

But 20 of the remaining houses were saved last minute. Attend the storytelling to learn more about the seaweed roofs and eelgrass thatching then, and now.

The last resident of Museumsgården was Sine Krogbæk, who was born at the farm in 1865, and stayed there until her death in 1949. During the final 10 years of her life, she was a custodian in her own home. Join the event to hear the story about her life.

Entrance fee 75 dkk. Children below the age of 18 can enter for free.

LÆSØ ON ITS WAY TO WORLD HERITAGE

PLACE: Storhaven, Storhavevej

Date and time: Thursday, September 11th at 15.00

Presenter: Torbjørn Ydegaard, Læsø Verdensarv ApS.

Læsø on its way to UNESCO's World Heritage List

Læsø's cultural heritage is something very special. With a geological underground which resulted in Denmark's first major industrial production during the Middle Ages, and a salt production which led to a societal catastrophy, which took the island several hundred years and Marshall-help to recover from. And a technique of thatching roofs from eelgrass "washers" invented by the women on the island.

This cultural heritage is so unique and of such universal value, that it deserves a spot on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Which is exactly what a group of people on Læsø is working towards.

Join the event to learn more about this extensive process, and all the information which needs to be gathered, before the application to the Heritage List can be submitted.

There will be coffee, and pancakes can be purchased.

Friday September 12th

HALS KIRKETOMT AND THE SAND DRIFTING

Place: Hals Kirketomt, parking lot, Hals Kirkevej

Time: Friday, September 12th at 9 - 10

Presentation: Simon Kyhn-Madsen, Læsø Museum

Hals Kirketomt – the sand drifting

3-400 years ago, the sand drifting left most of the northern part of Læsø desolate, including most of the town of Hals. The whole town, including Hals Church fell into poverty, and by the 1720s, the final resident of the town had to give up and leave as well.

It was not the church itself which became covered in sand, but the farmland surrounding Hals, on which the priest and the church were dependant on the income from.

Today, nothing is left of the church or the farms, which most likely surrounded it, but a big boulder marks the spot where the church used to be. The area around the spot is now protected, in memory of the sand drifting.

Participation is free of charge.

Jess is very interested in art and has collected many well-known and Læsø-related art pieces, which now adorn the walls of the house - for instance, Andreas Riis Carstensen and Christian Blache. Jess is going to tell us about the art, and you can see Thorvald's bed in the basement, where he used to take his mid-day nap.

Maks.
