Cycling on Læsø - 30 km of culture and nature

With a total of 118 km2, small roads, many cycle paths and beautiful scenery without hills, Læsø is an ideal starting point for a bike ride.
This route is about 30 kilometres long and on ordinary asphalt roads, so it can be ridden on all types of bikes.
You can bring your own bike or rent a bike on Læsø.

This route is on tarmac roads all the way and is therefore also suitable for regular bikes. If you're on a mountain bike or gravel bike, there are plenty of opportunities for variations in the route on some of the many forest roads and gravel roads on Læsø - for example in the dune plantation or along the north and east coasts on the old rescue tracks.
The route is created in AllTrails and you can download the map for printing - click on the white link

Vesterø Havn – Rønnerne

Follow Strandvejen towards Vesterø Church with its unique frescoes from around 1510 depicting the Holy Three Kings. Continue southwards, passing Galleri Anne Julie.
On Tørkerivej, you pass Haabet - Per Kirkeby's studio, which now functions as AIR - Artists in Residence, and where there may be changing exhibitions.

From Haabet, continue eastwards and follow the signs to Saltsyderiet. Along the way you will pass two good eateries - Cafe Buch and Storhaven - both worth a visit.
Further south is Læsø Saltsyderi, where you can experience the salt-making process and, in season, hear the story of how salt was made on Læsø in the Middle Ages. Now 'Saltet' is a large local business with thousands of visitors and a nice shop and webshop.
If you're brave enough, you can drive out to Rønnerne, Læsø's famous salt marsh area, where the salt works draws its groundwater, and an area with unique nature.

Rønnerne is a protected area with a number of islands with unique birdlife - so bring your binoculars.

Rønnerne – Byrum - Musumsgården

From Rønnerne continue to Byrum, which offers cafés, a cosy square with the Museum House, a supermarket and a butcher as well as Thorvald Hansen's Tower - definitely worth a visit.
From Byrum, drive eastwards along Museumsvejen to Museumsgården, one of the old seaweed farms on Læsø, which is now preserved as a museum. Take a walk around the impressive house and go inside - admission is charged.

Læsø Klitplantage - Vesterø Harbour

From Museumsgården, drive along Skovvej and Doktorvejen to Storedalsvej, and thus into Læsø Klitplantage.
The entire area is an important part of Læsø's history with old sand dunes that have been planted over the years and now belong to the Danish Nature Agency.
You can make a detour to Storedal with a very nice beach, or pop into Skovhytten and read more about the area.
From Klitplantagen, drive back along Plantagevej to Vesterø, where the ferry departs, and here you can make a nice stop with several restaurants, supermarket, fishmonger etc.
