Skovhytten on Læsø
On Storedalsvej close to the north coast of Læsø and the Kattegat lies Skovhytten, the Danish Nature Agency's information centre and a focal point for many activities - from hiking routes and exercise to a campfire, picnic area, information about the brown bees, playground for children's outings, depot for running races and much more.
There are tables/benches, toilets, posters about the area's flora and fauna, a fire pit, woodshed, horse paddocks and much more.
Skovhytten is located on Storedalsvej, close to the large open areas on the north coast of Læsø. There are good parking facilities, and if you come on foot or by bike, it's also easy to find your way to Skovhytten.
Skovhytten is built as a large log cabin with a green roof. Around Skovhytten there is an outdoor exercise track, a fire pit and an old-fashioned log splitter, there are tables and benches, bicycle parking, a nearby paddock for horses and, not least, some beehives and an exhibition beehive with information about Læsø's brown bees.
In Skovhytten there are changing exhibitions to help you learn more about nature.
The health trail
One of the offers at Skovhytten is the Health Trail - a fine obstacle course with challenges for both adults and children - and very popular when families or the local institution are on an excursion.
Skovhytten is also very popular as a natural pit stop for excursions and major exercise events such as Læsø Ultra and Læsø Rundt.
Lots of great hiking routes
With Skovhytten as a starting point, there are many good hiking opportunities for both children and adults. For example, the Danish Nature Agency has four signposted routes around Læsø Klitplantage, and then there's the famous Nisserute, a 3.6 km child-friendly hike that includes counting gnomes. The Gnome Route is great as an independent activity and is also part of the Læsø Island Treasure Hunt.
The brown bees
Læsø is home to a very special breed of bees, the brown bees, which are partially protected by the EU - the eastern side of Læsø is reserved for brown bees, and the Læsø Beekeepers' Association does a lot of work to preserve the breed.
In Skovhytten there is an exhibition about the brown bees, and previously there was an exhibition estate, but in 2025 it will be moved to Læsø Saltsyderi as the area around Skovhytten will be transformed into a National Nature Park, where so-called pets are not allowed. However, there are still posters about the brown bee.
